At age 7 - Year 2, pupils take one of two Mathematics papers - either the Level 2 or the Level 3 paper, according to their ability.
For each paper, there is a practice question, with the next few questions being read out by the teacher. Following which, the pupil
completes the rest of the paper by reading and answering the questions that are presented within the booklet.
At age 11, Year 6, pupils take the Level 3-5 mathematics papers, and a separate mental mathematics test. The two written papers are Test
A (Calculator not allowed) and test B (Calculator allowed). The highest mark that can been achieved on this paper is a level 5.
At age 14, Year 9 (and in some schools, age 13 - Year 8), children will take two written papers and one mental mathematics test. The school
decides which level each child should sit, which will depend upon their academic ability and teacher assessment of their ability. There are four
different levels that can be sat - Level 3-5, Level 4-6, Level 5-7, and Level 6-8. Level 3-5 being the lowest level paper, and level 6-8 being
the highest.
